This event brings together the region's transportation planners, engineers and decision makers to share information and lessons from innovative and successful transportation projects. All net proceeds will go to fund scholarships for ITE, WTS ITS RM and ACEC Colorado.
Student Scholarship Opportunities Abound!
Many opportunties are available for regional univeristy students to receive monies and recognition. Application is simple, particularly if the student has been or is currently involved in research at the university level.
The USDOT ITS Joint Program Office is currently sponsoring a student paper competition in conjunction with the 2010 National Rural ITS Conference. Several awards of up to $1000 will be available. Visit the conference website for more information.
ITS Rocky Mountain also hosts an annual student paper competition. Cash award and a chance to present a paper at a national event are included! Click here for more information.
2010 Elections will be held via email ballot beginning April 9th. Voting members of the ITS Rocky Mountain chapter will receive a ballot directly and are asked to review, complete and return the ballots by Friday, April 23rd. For information purposes, we have provided a brief bio for each candidate as well as a summary of all current officers.
The property, affairs, and business of the Chapter are managed and controlled by its Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is limited in number as outlined in the Bylaws and consists of the following individuals (from Bylaws):
The number of individuals within the Board of Directors shall not exceed sixteen (16) including the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Immediate Past President (known collectively as Officers), and up to twelve (12) State Senators (Senators).
Each state is represented on the Board of Directors by at least one, but also up to two Senators from the respective state. Each Senator serves a term of three (3) years. In 2010, both Idaho and Colorado seats are open for election. Terms will begin immediately upon election and end at the close of the Annual Meeting or Elections as indicated.
President
Mark Owens
Meridian Environmental Technology, Inc.
Term would expire in 2011
Mark currently serves as Senior Vice President, Operations for Meridian Environmental Technology, Inc. He has been instrumental in the coordination and implementation of eight statewide 511 deployments and as one of the original proof of concept researchers of Advanced Traveler Information Systems in the early to mid 90s by providing insight in standard policies and procedures of traveler operations that was later adopted for 511 National Guidelines. Mr. Owens is a member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS), and has served as Vice President of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America Rocky Mountain State Chapter and as a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives, representing District 18 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Social Science from Troy State University of Montgomery and his Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. Mr. Owens has also been serving on the Board of Directors for 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union since August 2001.

Jim Larsen
Ada County Highway District
Term would expire in 2011
Jim has been with the Ada County Highway District (ACHD) in Boise, ID for 13 years. He has held the title of Traffic Operations Engineer and is currently the Congestion Management Supervisor. Jim manages the ACHD Traffic Management Center, signal timing staff and servers as Project Manager on ACHD ITS projects.
Prior to working at ACHD Jim worked for the City of Redmond, Washington as Traffic Operations Engineer for 7 ½ yrs and for the City of Auburn, Washington as Traffic Design Engineer.
Jim is a past ITE Idaho Chapter President and is currently on the University of Idaho’s NIATT Advisory Board. Jim graduated from Washington State University with a BS in Civil Engineering.
Secretary/Treasurer
Bryan Chamberlain, PE
Utah Department of Transportation
Term would expire in 2013
Bryan has been with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for 15 years and has been filling various roles in UDOT’s Traffic Management Division for the past 10 years. He is currently the Program Manager for the ITS Deployment Section. Previous duties have included Traffic Operations Engineer, Traffic Operations Center Control Room Manager and Advanced Traffic Management Systems project manager. Bryan was the project manager for deployment of Utah’s 511 traveler information phone system, one of the first in the country, and has been a member of the National 511 Working Group Committee. He is also currently is a member of AASHTO’s IntelliDrive working group. Bryan graduated from the University of Utah with a BS degree in Civil Engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Utah.
Idaho Senatorial Candidate – per the Chapter Bylaws, a vote must be held to fill any anticipated vacancies if they occur at the time of a previously scheduled election. Such a vacancy will be created by the departure of Jim Larsen from the Idaho Senatorial seat pending the outcome of the Chapter Vice Presidential elections. As such, the following individual has been nominated to fill the vacancy until the term will end in 2011.
Benjamin Frevert, PE
Iteris, Inc.
Term would expire in 2011
Ben has over twenty years of transportation engineering experience and has worked in the ITS arena in a public agency role with the Federal Highway Administration and in a private consulting capacity with Iteris. He has significant background in development of ITS architectures, systems engineering and an array of specific technologies. He has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas and a Professional Engineer license in Idaho.

Brian Christensen
Horrocks Engineers, Inc.
Brian has a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Utah State University and has spent most of his career in traffic operations and ITS applications. He is an Associate at Horrocks Engineers. He is excited to see how technology breakthroughs have dramatically increased and improved ITS influences in our daily lives. He enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, mountain biking, and playing ultimate frisbee.
Sam Sherman
Iteris, Inc.
Sam Sherman joined the ranks of the ITS faithful full-time in early 2001, but has always had a passion for technology in transportation. Sam Sherman graduated from UC Davis with BS Degree in Civil Engineer in 1988 and joined Caltrans District 10-Stockton where he worked initially in the Project Development Division and worked his final 3 years in the Project Management Division. He later moved to Utah in 1998 and joined the UDOT Research Team and managed traffic, ITS and structure research projects during the exciting I-15 Design-Build reconstruction project. Mr. Sherman then transferred to the ITS Division in 2001 to coordinate Commercial Vehicle Operations & CVISN program, manage ITS Deployments projects and manage ATMS standards/procurements. Mr. Sherman left the public sector in 2005 after 17 enjoyable years and joined Iteris, Inc. and is managing ITS projects throughout the western United States.

Keith Trimels, PE
IDT Group, Inc.
Keith is a registered P.E. with 25 years of transportation experience. He has designed, built, & maintained roads throughout the U.S. in both the public & private sectors. He was a nationally-recognized FHWA safety & ITS engineer before serving as the Western Regional Manager for a national consultant. During that time, he was active in the national Road Weather program including day-to-day management of the Clarus initiative.
Mr. Trimels is currently a Principal for IDT Group where he develops and delivers technical, leadership, and organizational training. He is an NHI certified Master Trainer and has conducted dozens of ITS, safety, and transportation courses throughout the country. He serves on the Board of various non-profits including Wyoming Operation Lifesaver, a project-based charter high school, and the ITS Rocky Mountain state chapter of ITSA.
