Montana
RWIS
Montana's Remote
Weather Informational System (RWIS) consist
of 59 sites across the state. Remote weather informational systems
provide real time information via standard communication tools (phone
lines and computer network) statewide. These sites are located in
strategic locations to provide accurate real time weather information.
This information allows MDT personnel to schedule personnel and
equipment based on current weather and pavement surface conditions.
Real time weather information improves response time, increases winter
maintenance efficiency and minimizes the traveling public's exposure
to hazardous weather related roadway conditions.

for social service agencies and local transportation providers to
effectively coordinate their transportation services.
-
- Project
Abstract
- This
project is designed to produce a handbook that will allow social service
agencies and transportation providers a step-by-step plan for
coordinating transportation services. WTI will also produce a web-based
version of the handbook that will incorporate a search engine, links to
related references, and a database of collected information from Montana
agencies. This handbook is aimed towards developmental disabilities
service providers throughout the state of Montana. The handbook will
provide guidance in working with their community, the social service
providers, and the transportation providers to coordinate and improve
the transportation services available to the developmentally disabled.
The process outlined in the handbook will be applicable not only to
locally coordinated transportation but also to coordinating
transportation between different parts of the state. The desired
outcome, once the handbook is developed and local communities choose to
implement coordinated transportation with guidance from the handbook, is
that, All people with developmental disabilities access affordable,
reliable, efficient transportation that effectively meets their needs.

The Western Transportation Institute (WTI)
is implementing the Rural Public Safety and Communications Model
Deployment Initiative, one of the first national efforts to assist states
in the implementation of technology and communications projects to enhance
emergency medical services (EMS).
WTI is currently working with twelve states
on the Initiative with each state representing an existing or proposed
project for inclusion within the Initiative. The projects range from
employing a small area radio network for HAZMAT incidents to assisting
states in developing the necessary stakeholder base from which the state
can implement coordinated EMS improvement projects. In addition, the
Initiative has received the endorsement of the National Association of
State EMS Directors and WTI will be working with the Association
throughout the Initiative. (A full feature article on this
Initiative can be found in the January/February/March (Winter) 2002 issue of the ITS Rocky Mountain
Newsletter, page 8, www.itsrm.org/newslett.htm)
