Denver The Regional Transportation District (RTD) today introduced their new Talk-n-Ride telephone service.  RTD customers can now access real-time bus and light rail schedules, including current arrival times and arrival times for the next three buses or light rail trains scheduled for any given stop by calling 1-888-RTD-TRIP (1-888-783-8747) toll-free.

The system uses a succession of spoken queries along utilizing voice recognition technology to let RTD riders know if their specific bus or light rail trip is on time or delayed, and the arrival times of the next three buses scheduled at that location.   The spoken Route number, direction of travel, and location of the bus stop or name of the light rail station is all that is necessary to obtain the real-time information, and any phone, including wireless phones, can be used.  Assistance using the system is provided by simply saying, “Help.” RTD believes that it is the first transit agency in the country to offer this type of service to its passengers.

RTD continues to use the latest technology to provide every advantage to its riding public.  The RTD web site, www.RTD-Denver.com, which consistently receives over one million page hits per month, already offers real-time bus and light rail information.  The website also offers a trip planner that allows riders to enter beginning and ending location information to receive a complete itinerary for their trip.

The transit agency has also installed nearly 50 information kiosks throughout the metro area, where riders can obtain route and schedule information, plan a trip, and check the status of their bus or light rail trip.  Riders who have access to wireless handheld devices, such as Palm Pilot, can obtain the same information at the touch of a computer screen.  In addition, through an agreement between RTD and www.mytrafficnews.com, riders can subscribe to a daily e-mail at a set time to give them traffic updates and bus and light rail status information.

For route and schedule information, please call RTD’s Telephone Information Center at 303.299.6000.  Call 303.299.6089 for the speech and hearing impaired.  Visit RTD’s web site at www.RTD-Denver.com, or call the RTD Talk-n-Ride, 1-888-RTD-TRIP (1-888-783-7847).
